Camp Wobniar

      An Adirondack Cabin

Close and yet miles away...

  A study in good wood

Rainbow is a quiet lake system comprised of approximately 25 miles of unsullied and interconnecting waterways. The lake proper is punctuated by "Hogs Back", an esker (Ok - a long skinny island) formed by the retreating glaciers that chiseled the terrain of this rugged and beautiful place. Just a brief canoe paddle from Wobniar's dock around to the back side of the esker puts you in water bordering the State Forest Preserve and unfolding miles of pristine shoreline, woods, and mountains with nary a trace of humanity.

As for the cabin itself, Wobniar is solid, old, and has been lovingly refurbished with an eye towards the traditional "Adirondack Style". The main room boasts a gorgeous lakefront view, vaulted wood ceilings with natural cedar log beams, and pine walls. Two bedrooms, each with log beds, rest behind - providing a quiet and cozy retreat. Refinished 100-year-old pine plank floors run throughout.

Simple, small, rustic - call it what you will, but for those comfortable in their own skin there's really nothing else you'd need. In fact, spend a week at Wobniar reveling in the natural beauty of Rainbow Lake and there will be nothing else you'll really want - except, perhaps...

another week.

New front porch 2009

Nope - No TV. No DVD / audio system either. No video games. Dishwasher? Air conditioning? High-speed internet? Washer / dryer? Sorry. Point of fact, if you really want these things then truthfully Wobniar is probably not for you. If, however, you want simple elegance overlooking one of the best views on Rainbow Lake, with ready access to the natural wonders in the heart of the Adirondacks, then please consider this your personal invitation.

Location

Wobniar and Rainbow Lake lie at the northern center of the Adirondack State Park, about 12 miles northwest of the Saranac Lake, and about a 25 miles northwest of Lake Placid.

Once there, you'll find Camp Wobniar tucked into a quiet corner on the western end of the lake, as shown on the map here...

Things To Do

  • Fish. Rainbow is absolutely great for bass, northern pike, perch, and catfish and nearby Jones Pond is a famed bass fishing Mecca.
  • Canoe. Use Wobniar's or bring your own kayaks / canoes. Explore the vastness of Rainbow and connecting Lake Kushaqua, or paddle the famous St. Regis Canoe Area nearby.
  • Town. Saranac Lake has a small town yet funky feel that we love. Yet, if you're looking for upscale, then you may prefer Lake Placid, which is not too much further. For day trips: try the ferry over to Burlington VT for lunch or head up to Montreal - both approximately 2 hours away.
  • High Peaks. Climb one of the Adirondack 46 "high peaks" (whose summits' exceed 4000 feet) for an experience and view you'll not soon forget. Most have trails and many can be done in less than 8 hours of hiking time.
  • Swim & Relax. Wobniar provides a quiet and natural environment that is totally conducive to disconnecting from hurried lives in the "outside world". Read a book. Swim. Be still.
